A regulation by the Ministry of Agriculture enables farmers to receive a subsidy if they wish to contribute to the restoration of agricultural environment. Many farmers are willing to do so but maintenance is quite often a problem. In Twente (province of Overijssel) Louis Welhuis assists farmers in laying out wooden banks, ponds, brooks and hedgerows in the countryside and maintaining them. As a result many animal species such as birds and amphibians have returned to their restored habitat. Corridors in the countryside enable butterflies to move easily from one place to another. In general the farmers are enthusiastic about the renewed landscape and it is hoped other farmers will follow suit.
