The fen grasslands in the western parts of the Netherlands consist to a large extent of lakes, woods, fields and marshland. The region is also characterized by the presence of reed vegetation which occurs in different types, depending on the moisture in the land and the land use. An overview is given of the most important types of reedland and their management. Several striking butterfly and moth species which occur in these reedlands are discussed. In general, it is clear that the abundance of plant and butterfly species in a certain type of reedland, depends on the management measures taken.
