Lichens are an unusual source of food for a number of moth species. Some of these species are solely dependant on lichens, whereas other species are also able to feed on moss and other plant matter. Examples of these are given. Also of moth species which have developed a camouflage on lichens and others with striking colours. Most lichens are very sensitive to air pollution. In recent years, changes in the air pollution have had a favourable effect on lichens, which is reflected by a recovery of the moth species.
