Some striking observations made in the large butterfly survey in the Netherlands and Flanders are reported in this article. In the Netherlands, 1992 was a good year for Argynnis paphia, Colias hyale and especially for Papilio machaon. Two extremely rare butterfly species, Pontia daplidice and Iphiclides podalirius, were seen in small numbers. Interesting species in Flanders included Cyaniris semiargus, Leptidea sinapis and Melitaea cinxia.
