A population of Thecla betulae was found in a park in Wagenlngen containing many shrubs of Prunus spinosa, its predominant food plant. Observations on the hibernating eggs showed that they had been laid on young shoots of the outer shrubs, facing south. Thus giving warmth and shelter necessary for their development. Adult butterflies, mostly male specimens, were seen flying around the tops of trees and demonstrating their characteristic encounter behaviour.
