Grlend is a tiny uninhabited Island off the coast of Friesland in the Wadden Sea. Its remoteness makes it ideal as a breeding and refuge place for birds. The vegetation consists of predominantly grassland and dune flora. Bird-watchers’ reports have shown that 18 butterfly species have been seen on the Island since 1980. These Include migrants like Vanessa atalanta and Cynthia cardui, and common species such as Inachis io and Aglais urticae. Occasionally rarer species were also observed, Nymphalis polychloros eind Pontia daplidice. Most butterflies fly in from the mainland. Till recently only Pieris rapae was believed to be Indigenous on Grlend. It is expected that eventually other species will settle on the Island.
