In 1993 the Small Pearl-Bordered Fritillary (Clossiana selene) was reintroduced in a nature reserve in the province of Utrecht from where the species had disappeared. Its habitat consists of wet, nutrient poor and flower rich grassland. The results after one year are reported. Field surveys in 1994 show that the reintroduction seems to be a success. Although only a few butterflies of the first generation were observed (3 specimens) along the monitoring routes, the second generation was more numerous (36 specimens). Effective management measures like digging ditches and cutting turf have resulted in an increase of the foodplant and important nectar plants.
