A brief account Is given of the distribution and ecology of the Chequered Skipper (Carterocephalus palaemon) In Belgium and the Netherlands. In the Netherlands the butterfly has been classified as an endangered species whereas in Flanders the population has remained stable. The Chequered Skipper Is found In three main sites, each located separately from the other. The habitat consists of open spaces In woodlands or wood edges, often near to heathland. The sites are characterised further by the presence of one or more of the main foodplants l.e. Molinia caerulea, Calamogrostis canescens, Brachypodium sylvaticum and Brachypodium pinnatum.
