For naturalists, 1995 was an extremely rewarding butterfly year. A review of the most interesting observations in the Netherlands and Flanders is given. The summer witnessed a remarkable explosion of common species like the Peacock and Small Tortoiseshell, and an invasion of Camberwell Beauties. Other interesting species seen include the Large Tortoiseshell, Silver-washed Frltillary, Small Heath and the Monarch. In 1995 there were veiy few records of species like the Wall and Large Heath. It seems that the Pearly Heath has now virtually become extinct.
