The Heath Fritillary (Mellicta athalia), an endangered species, was reintroduced in 1995 in the Schipborger Strubben, a nature reserve in the province of Drenthe. The butterfly favours new woodland clearings and some heaths as its habitat. By using the mark-releaserecapture method, it was established that in 1996 the colony of the Heath Fritillary has remained the same in size. Coppice woodland management is of great importance for the butterfly population to expand and make the reintroduction a success.
