A survey on butterflies has been carried out in eastern Flanders since 1991 to assess the distribution of different species. The area being studied has a wide variety of habitats, consisting of woods, grassland and patches of heathland. A striking number of 36 species have been observed, including the Grizzled Skipper, Green Hairstreak, and Silver-washed Fritillary. A further aim of the project is the conservation of rare butterflies by means of adapted forms of nature management.
