The Silver-spotted Skipper (Hesperia comma) is a butterfly which favours chalk grassland with patchy vegetation. This habitat has declined drastically in the Netherlands, as has the butterfly species itself. In 1996 a population of Silver-spotted Skippers was discovered in a nature reserve situated in the coastal dunes of northern Holland. It is assumed that the butterflies belong to an isolated colony which luis existed for a long tune. Adult butterflies are too sedentary to have bridged the distance from neighbouring colonies.
