Acantholyda hieroglyphica (Symphyta, Pamphiliidae), scarce or not? Acantholyda hieroglyphica appeared to be a rather scarce sawfly in the Netherlands, as adults have been found only about 14 times so far. In 2009 however the author found larval nests, in 2 cases together with the adults, on various localities in the province of North-Brabant. These nests were found only on very small specimens of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris). Empty nests were found over a much longer period than the adults, until january 2010. These empty nests can easily be recognized and proved to give a useful indication on the abundance of A. hieroglyphica.
