Een pteropode nieuw voor het Plioceen van Estepona (Spanje)

An additional pteropod species, Limacina atlanta (Mörch, 1874) (Mollusca, Gastropoda, Euthecosomata) is recorded by a single specimen from the Pliocene (Piacenzian, according to the holoplanktonic mollusc assemblage) deposits outcropping in the environments of Estepona (province of Malaga, Spain). The species is known to occur during the interval Tortonian-Piacenzian, and therefore does not contribute to the discussion on the age assignment (Zanclian or Piacenzian) of these deposits. A single specimen of the heteropod Atlanta sp. is insufficiently preserved to acknowledge a re-identification as A. plana Richter, 1972 of two specimens of Atlanta sp. published earlier from Estepona and is hesitatingly labeled as, Atlanta ? peroni iLesueur, 1817. In 2004 publiceerde ik in Palaeontos een systematische beschrijving van de holoplanktonische molluskensoorten uit het Plioceen van de beroemde vindplaats Estepona, in de provincie Malaga (Spanje). Hoewel ik er nooit zelfben geweest, kreeg ik van verscheidene verzamelaars hun hetero- en pteropodenmateriaal ter bewerking en, voor een deel, ter opname in de RGM-collecties. Niet minder dan 18 soorten bleken aanwezig te zijn, waarvan drie heteropoden en 15 pteropoden. Erg interessant in dit materiaal was de aanwezigheid van enkele bathypelagische soorten, wat verklaard werd door de aanname van ‘upwelling’: uit diepere niveau’s opstijgend koud water, dat ook door de aanwezigheid van de benthische koudwatergastropode Patella pellucida L., 1758 werd aangetoond (da Silva et al., 2006).
