In south-central New York £ cyathigerum is found in bogs and highly vegetated ponds. The sibling taxon E. vernale occurs typically in vegetated streams and small rivers, and has been found in a lightly vegetated pond. Populations of £ cyathigerum are variable in a manner suggesting incomplete genetic separation, and vernale cannot be considered more than an ecological and partly geographic subspecies of cyathigerum.
