The distribution of the Odonata of the province of Newfoundland, Canada, is not well known. The mean number of locality records for the 33 species listed in E.M. WALKER (1953, 1958, The Odonata of Canada and Alaska. Vols. I. 2. Toronto Univ. Press) and E.M WALKER & PS. COR BET ( 1975. ditto, Voi 3) for Newfoundland (incl. Labrador) is only 3.5. and 12 are represented by only one record. Of these 33 species, 16 are in the genera Aeshna and Somatochlora, emphasizing the predominantly boreal nature of the fauna. A small collection of nine species of Odonata from the Avalon Peninsula increases our knowledge of the distribution of the province’s fauna and adds Leucorrhinia proxima Calv. to the Newfoundland list. Specimens are in the Spencer Entomological Museum, Department of Zoology, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, B.C.; all were collected by R.J. Cannings unless otherwise indicated.
