In Noord-Brabant, breeding Sparrowhawks normally switched to younger conifer plantations as soon as the trees of the breeding site had become too old. In 1997, forestry management changed from planting young conifers to natural regrowth after tree felling. Young conifer plantations have become scarce, and Sparrowhawks now lack alternatives to switch to after breeding sites have become too old.
