Attention is paid to the expansion drift of the Quagga mussel Dreissena bugensis in Europe. Since the forties it has moved slowly but steadily from the river Bug in Ukraina eastwards and has invaded already the Caspian Sea. In the past two years it has also been reported from the Danube in Romania, where it has reached already the border with Serbia. Since the Danube is connected by means of the Danube-Main-Rhine Canal with the river Rhine and all these rivers form intensive shipping routes, we may expect the arrival and settlement of this invasive freshwater mussel also in the Rhine in the near future. Careful inspections of future finds of Dreissena the Rhine are recommended.
