Zonitoides excavatus (Bean) was first recorded from Britain in 1830. On the continent of Europe the species was not found with certainty before 1916 in the Dutch province of Drente. After that year it was recorded from several other localities especially in the N.-E. and Central-Southern provinces of the Netherlands. The only finding-place in Germany (near Bremen in 1921) joins the localities in the N.-E. of the Netherlands, the only certain finding-place in Belgium joins those of the southern province of Noord-Brabant. On the continent the species seems to prefer the same sort of localities as in Britain and Ireland: in or on the margins of ancient woods. From a number of Dutch finding-places the accompanying species of mollusks are mentioned.
