The specimen on which the only record of Epitonium (Clathrus) trevelyanum (Johnston) from the Netherlands was based proved not to belong to that species, but to a species of the exotic subgenus Gyroscala. It is consequently an exotic shell which must have been imported in some way or other into the Netherlands.
