During preparation of a paper on the types of Bulimulidae in the Museum National d’Histoire Naturelle in Paris it appeared that the type localities of many of d’Orbigny’s species could be traced with great accuracy. This is usually not the case with the localities of contemporary authors. Originally intended to form an appendix to the abovementioned paper it was decided to be of more benefit to publish an index of all neotropical land molluscs described by d’Orbigny while at the same time adding notes on the localities of the mainland species. For the species described in d’Orbigny (1835) the localities mentioned in the ‘Voyage dans l’Amérique méridionale’ (1834-47) have been added, as they present more detailed information. The localities of the Cuban species are much less precise; therefore no attempt has been made to trace them.
