The well-known malacologist Ferdinando Carrozza from Soiana passed away early last year. Because of our longtime friendship I like to write some words about the intensive and personal relation between Ferdinando and myself. Nearly 30 years ago I received a letter from an Italian malacologist named F.Carrozza. I did not know him then but agreed to look at the shells he would like to send me ” for inspection”. This was the start of many parcels being sent between the two of us. Gradually it became evident that we shared interest in several important issues: micromollusca and Indo-Pacific migrants into the Mediterranean. During study of the (sometimes very small) shells that Ferdinando sorted out from different Mediterranean deposits I was impressed by his keen eye with which he spotted differences which were passed over by other collectors.
