(Snails as alpinists.) The author observed the presence of juvenile specimens of Helix aperta (and presumably of Cepaea nemoralis and Arianta arbustorum ) that obviously had climbed up against fences, posts, walls and tree-trunks up to a height of nearly two metres above ground. The reason for this migration is obscure, because the juvenile specimens are exposed to desiccation and to predators (birds, ants). Readers are invited to suggest possible explanations. One possible explanation could be the search for food. The bare and smooth substrate however, (even brick and concrete walls) are not very promising feeding grounds. (Apart from plant spores and/or pollen grains, which may, after deposition from the air, adhere to them).
