Mummification of terrestrial gastropods on a concrete wall. The complete desiccation of large numbers of terrestrial slugs, in particular Deroceras and some shelled gastropods, is reported from a concrete wall of a viaduct in the Highway A-7 in polder de Beemster, province North-Holland, The Netherlands. Both slugs and snails were found in the form of mummies still adhered in a crawling position to the vertical wall. Although the majority of the dried out victims was encountered on the sunny side of the wall (facing N.E.) most probably not overheating caused the slow but lethal desiccation of the crawling animals, but a chemical in the concrete wall.
