Is shell repair frequent in landsnails? Some quantitative data are given on shell repair in land gastropods after an unsuccessful attack by a predator (probably Carabid groundbeetles). Frequency of shell repair in the last whorl varied from less than 10% in Helix aspersa from Texel and Zebrina detrita from Hungary, to approx. 40% in Helix pomatia and Helicella obvia, both from Hungary. It is suggested that shell structures like a narrow dentated mouth opening and a thickened aaperture rim are defensive characters of the shell against small predators like groundbeetles, but it is unlikely that they will prevent predation by birds and small rodents. During evolution there might have been an ""armsrace"" on land between Carabid beetles and landsnails comparable to that in the sea between crabs and marine gastropods.
