Only two species of landmolluscs are protected by law in Belgium: Helix pomatia (in the whole country) and Helix aspersa (only in Wallonia). In accordance with the Habitat Directive of the E.C., 4 species are proposed for special Drotection by the Institute for Nature Conservancy: Vertigo angustior, Vertigo moulinsiana, Unio crassus and Margarifera margaritifera. In order to protect the indigenous fauna, a law was voted in 1993 to prohibit the introduction of foreign species. Although a Red List of endangered Belgian molluscs would be welcome, the draw up of such a list is not yet for tomorrow.
