Removal of a part of the outer layer in the region of the umbo of a few Palliolum gerardi (Nyst, 1835) shells showed that the ’white spot’ remained on the shell, being a part of the upper surface of the inner layer, whereas the removed outer shell layer did not show any trace of the white spot. It follows that no white colour pattern on these shells was present (fig. 1 & 2). Strong light on the Palliolum with the remnants of an elaborate colour pattern (Van der Burg 1995: 30 fig.1) showed also the presence of a white inner layer (fig. 3). The results of these experiments demonstrate that the original identification of the valve as a Palliolum gerardi was correct.
