Landsnails along railway embankments, 1. Introduction. In the wake of a recently published book, ‘Railways, refuge for plants and animals’ (Koster, 1991), some brief notes are given concerning the role of railway embankments as a habitat and means of dispersal for landsnails. The book contains no information at all although this feature has been dealt with here-and-there in the malacological literature. The author has started a malacological survey of railway embankments in the province of Noord-Holland. The results will be published in forthcoming issues.
