Miss M.J. de Graag (born in 1879) was one of the first female members of the Dutch Malacological Society. She combined travelling with collecting and visited among others both South America and South Africa. Poropteron graagae Coen, 1847 described from Margate, Natal, South Africa was dedicated to her. A slightly older sister Miss A.J. de Graag (1877-1924) was active in a quite different field: art. She had studied at the Academy of Arts in the Hague and has produced numerous paintings, woodcuts and etchings. The G.S. Coen mollusc collection, now in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, contains an interesting print, made by means of the woodcut technique, depicting a Nautilus. This woodcut combines the interests of the two sisters: conchology and art.
