In at least one case the pearl formation seems to have been triggered by sand grains. The name Peronaea Poli, 1795, based on Tellina radiata, has been elevated to generic level since the type of the genus Tellina Linnaeus, 1758 i.e. Tellina radiata Linnaeus, 1758, differs in too many conchological aspects to allow the arrange- ment of these two species within a single genus.
