The third SIAL meeting had a strong interdisciplinary component, bringing together different scientific fields focused on the physical and biological evolution of ancient lakes. Talks of interest to malacologists include evolutionary and ecological data on the speciesrich gastropod fauna of Lake Baikal. D. Sherbakov presented evidence for explosive speciation events in a molecular phylogeny of the Baicaliidae indicated by a hard polytomy. P. Röpstorf, T. Sitnikova and E. Shirokaya presented longterm studies mainly on ontogenetic life stage differences among species of several endemic families (Planorbidae, Baicaliidae, Acroloxidae). M. Stift presented research on a palearctic lymnaeid that recently established in Lake Baikal.
