The development of Buxbaumia aphylla sporophytes in pictures There are only very few pictures available of the early stages of sporophyte development in Buxbaumia aphylla, undoubtedly due to the tiny size of these sporophytes and the absence of clearly visible gametophytes, which makes them very hard to find. In this short article, several stages of sporophyte development are illustrated, including some very young stages. It appears that a sporophyte can reach its full length within 6 or 7 weeks after the start of its development. In the Netherlands, these early stages can be found in September-November.
