On the beaches supplemented with sand from the Eurogeul area, shiny black fish vertebrae with a typical hourglass shape are regularly found. These vertebrae are all distorted by hyperostosis (bone thickening). Because of their deformation they have remained unidentified until now. Research of the vertebrae has led to a reconstruction of the original morphology. Based on this reconstruction, the vertebrae were identified as haddock Melanogrammus aeglefinus (Linnaeus, 1758).
