De ectoparasiet Carnus hemapterus in oksels van nestjonge Rode Wouwen Milvus milvus

Two nests of Red Kite in the eastern Netherlands in 2021, each contained three chicks, ranging in age between 6 and 11 days old (hatching day = 0). All chicks were found to have scabby axillae, the result of infestation with the fly Carnus hemapterus. The number of Carnus flies was estimated at 5-15 per chick.
