Rijksweg A12: een barrière voor de ringslang binnen de 'Groene ruggengraat'

Highway A12, a barrier for grass snakes within the ‘Green spine’? Highway A12 (The Hague-Utrecht) crosses the ecological corridor ‘Groene ruggengraat’ (Green spine) which is part of the Dutch National Nature Network that connects nature reserves, including Natura2000 sites. In between lanes, there is a 26 meter wide natural central verge. To facilitate safe A12 wildlife passage, a wildlife crossing structure and (wildlife) fences have been constructed in 2012. Three more structures, two of which are partly adapted to facilitate wildlife crossings, lay in the direct vicinity. To determine if grass snakes (N. helvetica) actually cross the highway, a three year study was conducted with capture-recapture methodology. During 103 surveys, 143 catches were made of 90 individuals. Two specimens made a full crossing of the highway and two a half crossing. Because of the methodology, it is unknown whether these individuals migrated through the wildlife crossing or the other structures (or a combination of these). The finding of nine grass snakes (max. seven individuals) behind the wildlife fences, demonstrates that these fencings do not function properly. Because of the agility of reptiles (and amphibians) the authors plea to pay better attention to the type, material, shape and location of fences in general and particularly to refrain from the use of plastic fencing De in 1990 geformuleerde Ecologische Hoofdstructuur (EHS) moest de basis leggen voor het realiseren van een samenhangend netwerk van Nederlandse natuurgebieden. Toen de verantwoordelijkheid daarvoor in 2014 van het Rijk naar de provincies werd overgedragen, is de EHS grotendeels opgenomen in het Natuurnetwerk Nederland (NNN). Dit natuurnetwerk moet bestaande en nieuw te realiseren Nederlandse natuurgebieden beter met elkaar verbinden. Het gaat daarbij onder andere om het aankopen en inrichten van nieuwe natuurterreinen en het opheffen van barrièrewerking door infrastructuur. Het Meerjarenprogramma Ontsnippering (MJPO) leverde in de periode 2005 t/m 2018 een belangrijke bijdrage aan het oplossen van knelpunten door Rijksinfrastructuur binnen het NNN, middels de realisatie van faunapassages zoals ecoducten en dassentunnels.
