A shell project in a primary school
Spirula , Volume 411 p. 49- 52
The primary Verhoeff-Rollman school in Bodegraven offers extra-curricular small group sessions for academically gifted children. The author (and teacher of these children) motivated this group to focus on shells for a project that ran from September 2016 through February 2017. A broad variety of learning materials and techniques was used to get the children interested in shells. Pupils from the oldest group undertook ‘research’ on topics like ‘How do pearls come about’? The full project culminated in an exhibition that was presented to fellow pupils, parents and siblings. Over the project period most children gained more interest in the subject. Perhaps, societies of shell collectors could support projects like this by making available ‘demonstration collections’ with a large variety of shells.
