‘Bèr’, een iconische Maastrichtse mosasauriër – van opgraving tot eye-catcher in de nieuwe Mosasaurus Experience

Abstract The Sint-Pietersberg area, south of Maastricht (province of Limburg, the Netherlands), is the birthplace of mosasaurs; marine squamate lizards of latest Cretaceous age. Two partial skulls, recovered from subterranean galleries at Sint-Pietersberg in 1764 and 1778, respectively, made scientists reflect on the possibility that organisms could actually go extinct and, in doing so, paved the way for Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution (1859). Interest in these magnificent animals has never abated since, across the globe. Here, one of the partial skeletons collected during recent decades, is given centre stage – ‘Bèr’, the holotype of a new species, Prognathodon saturator. Its skull has been on display in its own ‘mosaleum’ on the inner square of the Natuurhistorisch Museum Maastricht for over 20 years but now, visitors get to stand eye to eye with a newly printed 3D reconstruction of its entire skeleton in the exhibition ‘Meet ‘Bèr’ – Mosasaur Experience. Samenvatting De Sint-Pietersberg en omgeving, ten zuiden van Maastricht, vormt de ‘geboortegrond’ van mosasauriërs, in zee levende hagedissen tijdens het Laat Krijt. Twee incomplete schedels, afkomstig uit de ondergrondse gangenstelsels in de SintPietersberg en gevonden in respectievelijk 1764 en 1778, zetten geleerden aan het denken. Dat soorten in feite konden uitsterven was een nieuwe gedachte, die de deur wagenwijd openzette voor de evolutietheorie (1859) van Charles Darwin. Sinds die tijd hebben deze magnifieke dieren over aandacht niet te klagen gehad, en dat wereldwijd. Hier krijgt één van de skeletten die de afgelopen decennia zijn verzameld, alle aandacht – ‘Bèr’, het type-exemplaar van een nieuwe soort, Prognathodon saturator. Zijn schedel ligt al meer dan 20 jaar te pronken in zijn eigen ‘mosaleum’ op de binnenplaats van het Natuurhistorisch Museum Maastricht maar sinds kort krijgen museumbezoekers binnen de kans om oog in oog te staan met een geprinte 3D reconstructie van zijn hele skelet in de expositie ‘Ontmoet ‘Bèr’ – Mosasaurus Experience.
