In 2018, nature restoration works at the island of Texel (Dutch Wadden Sea) revealed historic shell occurrences of Oysters Ostrea edulis Linnaeus, 1758 in former Wadden Sea sediment. In this article, a concise overview is presented of the historic oyster fishery and oyster culture as performed by fishermen from Oosterend (Texel), the former island of Wieringen, and Den Helder. Oyster fishery disappeared from this part of the Wadden Sea due to man-induced changes in hydrography, endikement and overexploitation.
