The Queen of Spain Fritillary (Issoria lathonia) is a butterfly species listed as extinct in Flanders. During the past years there have been regular sightings of specimens, mostly vagrants from neighbouring countries. Increasing numbers of the Queen of Spain Fritillary have been seen in the coastal dunes, its natural habitat. It is likely that a small colony now exists on two different sites in the coastal dune region of Flanders. Improved management like grazing is hoped to ensure permanent populations of the species.
